“I hope so,” Olive said. She lifted her head and sniffed the air with her ogre nose.

“Fee-fi … yes, I smell apples in the distance.”

Pearl stepped between the trees and stumbled over a branch. Flickety-toss! She was about to make her horn glow with light so they could see. But then she remembered she was just plain Pearl.

Pearl stopped. What was that? There was something behind them.

“Gobble-un?” squawked Tweet.

“Of course not,” Olive said.

Pearl looked over her shoulder. What if it was a gobble-un? Just a little flickety-toss and she’d be able to see. But then she remembered that she was trying to be just plain Pearl. Shivering snakes, thought Pearl. Being just plain Pearl is harder than making magic!

Pearl, Olive, and Tweet trotted on through the dark forest, until Olive suddenly cried out,
